Environmental risk analysis

All industrial activities and processes potentially generate environmental risk.  It is essential to identify and evaluate those risks related to the processes and storage of chemical products and waste and also to characterise the environmental sensitivity of the industrial plant whilst identifying the potential receptors that may be affected during different plant operations.  Prevention and protection plans for the potential receptors are drawn up following this analysis.

Furthermore, in the specific case of contaminated soils and groundwater, the use of these types of detailed risk evaluation tools is set out in the law as criteria for declaration of quality.

In this case, the first step is to identify the presence of contaminants at a particular site.  Then the second step is to evaluate the risk to human health and the ecosystems that this may affect and, based on the results that are obtained, to propose means of recovery and control.

Despite the extensive use of commercial software for the calculation of these risks, in our experience we have seen how they are often used as a “black box”.  The improper use of this software may result in over- or underestimation of the existing risks.  It is therefore fundamental to correctly define the conceptual model and select the suitable variables to be considered for each specific case.

For this reason, Talantia offers an intelligent approach to tailored risk evaluation. Results allow the client, as well as the administrations in charge, to know whether clean-up operations are necessary or not, and if the levels to be reached are compatible with the current and future uses of the sites under evaluation.

In addition to risk modelling, Talantia also carries out specific studies such as vapour monitoring, bioavailability, speciation etc., which in many cases can be key to environmental risk evaluation.
